Everything about training with Surf Like a Girl Team: who it's for, the levels, how trainings work, video analysis, where we train and who we are.
Getting started
Who is Surf Like a Girl Team for?
Surf Like a Girl Team is surf training for women: from those taking their first steps in surfing to those who already surf on their own and want to refine their technique, maneuvers and style.
Is Surf Like a Girl only for women?
Yes. The trainings and the community of Surf Like a Girl Team are exclusively for women.
Do I need surfing experience to join?
No. Level I, in Florianópolis and São Paulo, is for women just starting out, or not yet able to surf on their own. The coach stays with you in the water for the whole session, working on take-off, safety, line-up etiquette, paddling and wave selection.
Which level is right for me?
Surf Like a Girl Team has three levels. Level I builds the foundation, for those starting out. Level II works on independence, for those who already surf but still need support in the water. Level III is technical refinement with filmed sessions and video analysis, for those who already surf on their own. There's also Online video analysis, for anyone far from the training bases.
In which languages are the trainings?
Surf Like a Girl Team's trainings and support are in Portuguese and English.
Is there a minimum age?
Surf Like a Girl Team usually trains girls and women from 14 years old. Younger girls are assessed individually, mainly on their experience in the ocean, their swimming and how independent they are in the water; when needed, a parent or guardian may be asked to come along.

How training works
How long is a training session?
A Surf Like a Girl Team surf session lasts about 1.5 hours. Level III, and some of the plans, also include a 30-minute video analysis, with technical feedback and direction for your next sessions.
How many students per coach?
Surf Like a Girl Team trains in small groups for quality, safety and individual attention: at most 4 students per coach in Level I and Level II, and at most 6 in Level III, which doesn't need one-to-one support in the water for the whole session.
When are the trainings?
Surf Like a Girl Team opens trainings every week, depending on the wave conditions, so each session happens on the best days for your level. Training adapts to your routine and personal goals.
Is the coach in the water with me?
In Level I and Level II, yes: your coach is in the water with you. In Level III the coach stays on the sand and films the session, because that training is built on video analysis.
How does video analysis work?
Your session is filmed so you can watch your surfing from the outside: you see what needs to change, then train with intention. Each analysis comes with specific exercises and a personalized plan for your next session.
Can I train with Surf Like a Girl online?
Yes. With Online video analysis you send videos of your surfing from anywhere in the world and book your video analysis meeting, at least 3 days ahead so your coach has time to watch the footage and prepare the technical analysis, exercises and next steps.
Do I need my own board and wetsuit?
It depends on your level. Level I: equipment is 100% included when needed. Level II: equipment is available when needed. Level III: you should have your own board and equipment, suited to your level of surfing.
Do you coach longboarding?
Yes. In Florianópolis, coaches Janaina Maya and Valéria de Bem are longboard specialists, and Janaina is the team's main reference for longboard training.
Is there more than the surf sessions?
Yes. Surf Like a Girl Team has monthly Surfing Days, with events and experiences beyond the water, and a private group where the women share tips, support and progress.

About Surf Like a Girl
Who created Surf Like a Girl Team?
Marina Rezende, a Brazilian professional surfer with more than 10 years on the WSL, competing from the Pro Junior at 18. She created the Surf Like a Girl methodology and coaches intermediate and advanced surfers, in and out of the water.
Why is it called Surf Like a Girl?
Since she was a little girl, Marina kept hearing the same line: “Wow… you rip. You surf like a man.” Surf Like a Girl turns that line inside out: women don't want to surf like a man, they want to rip, with style, flow, power and personality, and surf exactly “just like a girl”.
Is Surf Like a Girl part of Surf Family?
Surf Like a Girl Team was created by Marina Rezende, the second generation of the family behind Surf Family, the surf school in Barra da Lagoa, Florianópolis, teaching since 2000. Surf Like a Girl has its own methodology and its own team of coaches.
